A search of the records currently available on the internet reveals a Coultish family in the Lancashire parish of Tunstall and Melling, registering the birth of Thomas, son of John Coultish, born 9 November 1638, but no further records of the name appear in that area. In 1765 a William Coultish appears in South Cave, East Yorkshire. The surname recorded at William’s birth, however, is Coulties and the variations of his son William’s surname are almost as many as the events recorded: Coulties (christening 1789), Coultis (marriage 1815), Coultas (daughter Mary’s birth 1816), Coltish (daughter Jane’s birth 1820), Coultish (daughter Sarah’s birth 1822), Coltish again (son William’s birth 1828) and back to Coultish (daughter Anne’s birth 1836 and daughter Caroline’s birth 1839). This suggests that the name Coultish is a corruption of an established surname, possibly Coultas, originally Scottish but relatively common in Yorkshire.

The Coultish Family Tree posted here records the first East Yorkshire William and his descendants who lived in and around the village of Broomfleet on the northern shore of the Humber estuary. Ensuing generations spread throughout England, but mostly to West and North Yorkshire, Lancashire, the North-East, with clusters in Canada and a line in Australia. In the interest of continuity the name Coultish has been used throughout. Only Coultishes, their spouses and children born before 1920 are posted, with the exception of Scott Coultish, the owner and administrator of this site, and Hazel Bargiel, the builder of the tree and writer of this piece. Apologies in advance for the inevitable errors and discrepancies. You are welcome to submit your corrections, additions, comments, suggestions and anecdotes via the contact form, so chivvy your grandparents into revealing old facts, figures and long-buried gems of information before it’s too late!

An up-to-date Coultish Family Tree is also envisaged, giving details of living Coultishes. Only those who can prove their affiliation or association and are willing to provide details will have access to this restricted tree via a password. Please provide all available data, i.e. names, dates, events and places. Profiles of individual Coultishes will be posted either in the open or restricted area, according to confidentiality.

As it is a relatively new name, no Coultish family crest exists and suggestions are invited. May I irreverently suggest a babe in the arms of its mother, but no father, reflecting the number of illegitimates; a scrawled cross, donating the illiterates; a feather duster, pointing to the many domestic servants; and a tool, depicting manual labour! This only goes to show how times have changed and how easier life has become for the living Coultishes.

For more information please fill out the following

>Hazel Bargiel
June 2006
FranceTo view our family tree, click HERE

Coultish Family Tree The name Coultish is extremely rare.
